Since 1997, we have been guided by ‘ike kupuna, the wisdom of our ancestors,to empower families to overcome challenges, build resilience, and create healthy, thriving communities.

E mālama i ka ‘ohana, ola ke kaiāulu—care for the family, and the community lives. This is the foundation of the work we have done to make an impact on families, caregivers, and youth for the last three decades, all because of supporters like you.

For 28 years, Partners in Development Foundation (PIDF) has been committed to building stronger, more self-sufficient communities across Hawai‘i.

One of the most important ways we help Hawaiians grow is through Kupa ʻAina, a program dedicated to food security, sustainable agriculture, and youth empowerment.

Kupa ʻAina is more than a farm—it’s a space for learning, healing, and reconnecting with ‘āina. Over the years since 2018, Kupa ʻAina has been a place where 278 youth mentorship trainings have taken place.

In Kailua, Oʻahu, we give youth the ability to learn about sustainable food production on their native lands.

Of all the mentorship training, 26% have been native Hawaiians learning how to be food secure using teachings from traditional practices.

A program like Kupa ʻAina is not possible without donations from fervent supporters like you. With your help, we can continue to provide these educational opportunities to the youth of the islands, and continue to grow not just our ‘āina, but our kaiaulu.

Today we celebrate an amazing milestone in the story of Partners in Development Foundation.

28 years of serving Hawai‘i’s families and communities.

A simple conversation between our founders: Jan Dill, Morris Takushi, and the late Gary Glenn, started PIDF and grew it into one of Hawai‘i’s most prominent nonprofit organizations. They saw a future where PIDF fills the gaps in resources that were available to native Hawaiians. Today, we support our communities with social services, education and sustainable agriculture skills.

None of this would be possible without you. Your unwavering support has helped us:

-Provide keiki with excellent early childhood education, giving them a strong foundation for success.

-Empower at-risk youth with workforce development skills and mentorship from elders.

-Teach sustainable solutions for food security and foster deeper community connections.

At PIDF, we work hard to respond to the changing needs of our communities. Expanding our programming and forming partnerships to bring support to our friends and families.

One of the most important examples of this commitment was Open Arms Harbor, an isolation-quarantine facility that became a puʻuhonua (a place of refuge) for more than 200 community members exposed to or diagnosed with COVID-19. In partnership with the City and County of Honolulu and the Department of Health, PIDF stepped up to provide daily wellness checks, case management, meals, and even moments of joy—like surprise birthday celebrations and holiday gifts—during an incredibly difficult time.

“Across Hawaiʻi, our community response to this coronavirus pandemic is proof of how resilient we are, how innovative we can be, and how we can partner in new ways to do things we never thought possible,” said Shawn Kanaʻiaupuni, President and CEO of PIDF.

This was the best example that PIDF adapts and serves wherever we are needed most. Whether you’ve donated, volunteered, or shared our mission with others, you’ve played a vital role in this journey—and for that, we are deeply grateful.

For 28 years, Partners in Development Foundation (PIDF) has been dedicated to serving Hawai‘i’s families and communities, providing vital education, mentorship, and cultural programs that uplift and empower. Thanks to supporters like you, we’ve made a lasting impact on the future of Hawaiians.

But today, we face a new challenge that we need to face, together.

A recent Executive Order has temporarily frozen federal financial assistance programs, creating uncertainty for organizations like us that rely on federal funding to support their communities. Currently, over 70% of PIDF’s funding comes from federal sources. If this freeze continues, it could impact our services in 45 communities across Hawai‘i, affecting over 3k young children and 3k caregivers each year.

Our no-cost, high-quality programs provide:
-Early childhood education to give our keiki a strong foundation in learning.
-Mentorship and workforce development programs to help our youth build brighter futures.
-Community support services that strengthen and uplift Hawai‘i’s families.

At PIDF, we remain committed to our mission. We are actively advocating for continued support and funding to ensure these vital programs remain available. Right now, all PIDF programs continue to operate as usual, but we want to be transparent about the challenges ahead.
